LAJOS ISTVÁN: MY
PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIL ARS POETICA
------------------------
Dr. Lajos István was 80 in 2002. The Szombathely
Scientific Association has saluted him on a festive meeting. The
professor - one of the organisers of the Hungarian blood supply
service, the prominent doctor - is still an active public
character and patriot; he read on this meeting his essay
published here. In this essay he offers an overview on his life,
on the influencing persons and principles.
PÉTER MARKÓ:
NATIONAL IDENTITY AND THE ROLE ALPS-ADRIA WORKING
COMMUNITY IN THE INTEGRATING EUROPE
-----
The President of the Vas County Assembly, as the
current chairman of the International Folk Art Organisation
(ICV), has delivered the speech published here on the 10th
Conference of the Organisation, on May 10th, 2002 in Vienna, in
German language. He applied the Kantian differentiation between
the civilisation and culture to the Central European countries
being under modernisation pressure. He deemed that in the
integrating Europe, the diversity and the unity had to be always
emphasised, or: it is pole of diversity and similarity. "We
should trust that the tenacious activity of the ICV will
contribute to the discontinuation of the false alternative of
modernity versus identity."

KOVÁCS: ISTVÁN MAGYARI
(Writer's Portraits from "This Side" of the Danube -
I.)
-----
The philological essays of the starting portrait
series, entitled: Writer's Portraits from "this side"
of the Danube present the 16th-17th century writers in Upper
Pannonia bordered by the historical Transdanubia, Danube, Mura,
Drava (Pannonia Superior). The first portrait is on
István Magyari (cca. 1570-1605), a predicant at Sárvár, being
the so-called regional landscape aspect's representative: He
called himself as being from "this side of Danube".
This archaic landscape consciousness has almost completely
disappeared by now, only the so-called "central landscape
aspect" is prevails: We can see from the Hungarian capital,
from the Pest side as being over the Danube: it is the
Transdanubia. The Lutheran István Magyari was the army chaplain
of Ferenc Nádasdy, the chief captain of Sopron and Vas Counties,
its main work: The reasons of many decays in the countries
(Sárvár, 1602), the product of the anti-Turkey literature
and the Protestant-Catholic polemics, following mainly the German
pamphlet of Johannes Aventinus (1563). Its interesting nation
characterology ("Der Ungarn mördet. / Der Frantzos
singet") possibly follows a German source as well. The young
Péter Pázmány, the later great cardinal tried to refute in a
massive counter-book as an answer to the impelling book of
Magyari.
FERENC TÓTH: LO,
MY DEAR AUNT, THIS GOING TO BE MY LAST LETTER...
Contributions to the manuscript history of Kelemen Mikes's work
"Letters From Turkey"
-----
Kelemen Mikes's famous works has been published in
1794 at Szombathely, by István Kultsár, a local teacher. There
are two theories regarding the way of the manuscript from
Tekirdag to Szombathely. According to the first theory a French
hussar officer and diplomat of Hungarian origin, François de
Tott has brought it when he emigrated. The second theory deems
more likely the mediating role of a Hungarophile Bosnian pasha.
Lajos Hopp, the critical editor of the Mikes Letters accepts this
second theory as well. According to the recent researches, this
deeply rooted theory seems to be shaken by several arguments. Is
is a proved fact, that András Tóth, acting in French service,
father of François de Tott played an important role in getting
the manuscripts of Ferenc Rákóczi II to France. The French
connection seems to be strengthened by several circumstances - of
seemingly minor importance - that were not taken into account by
the researchers of this issue. The study endeavours to provide a
more accurate picture on this still unsolved mystery of our
literary history.
THE MEMORY OF
IVÁN LAJOS
-----
Dr. Iván Lajos (1906-1953) - forgotten for
decades, a jurist at Pécs, wrote in 1939 a book in which - based
exclusively on German specialised literature data - he proved
that Germany can not win in a World War. The work has been
published in several languages. After the German occupation of
Hungary in 1944, the brave author has been deported in a
concentration camp, from where he escaped in 1945. Later on, he
was captured by the Soviets and died at Gulag. Dr. Lajos István,
a physician professor, Szombathely, has recorded his personal
memories regarding Iván Lajos. Following this, three essays
prepared by academicians are published; these were written on the
occasion of the inauguration of Iván Lajos's statue at Pécs.
HOME-COMING OF
ISTVÁN BORSODY
-----
István Borsody (1911-2000) was born at Eperjes
(Preov) - belonging today to Slovakia, then lived in the United
States for decades. His book entitled "Bene", published
in 1943 in Budapest - which presented the extremist chauvinist
leader of Czechoslovakia - has been republished by the Savaria
University Press (SUP), operating within the Szombathely College,
in 2001. The book's introduction took place at Kőszeg, and at
the same time, the Borsody Library and Memorial Room has been
opened as well. Hereby, the analyses of Attila Katona and Károly
Grúber - delivered on the opening - are published.
LÁSZLÓ KRIZSÁN:
REMEMBERING LÁSZLÓ BENDEFY,
ON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH
-----
László Bendefy (1904-1977) born at Vasvár, was
the doctor of earth sciences, however, he was deservedly called a
polyhistor since he put himself on record in hydrology,
geography, cartography, archaeology, anthropology, history and
even in Africa-reasearch. The author overviews the course of life
of the great scientist and provides a more detailed insight into
the plan of Hungarian Africa Expedition, also connected to the
name of Bendefy, ultimately hindered by the World policy events
in the 1930s.
MRS. ÉVA KOVÁCS
KONDICS: KÖRMEND AND THE KOSSUTH CULT
-----
In 1889, the year in which the law jeopardising
Lajos Kossuth's citizenship as well became effective, the Kossuth
cult gain huge dimensions all over Hungary. Representing the
independent youth of Körmend, the Udvary brothers - Feri and
Jenő - started off on iron horse (a huge tricycle) to visit the
"Great Homeless" in Turin. Feri Udvary prepared an
interesting report on their Paris-Turin journey in which he
related on their meeting with Kossuth.
-----The brothers had a significant role in
stregthening the Kossuth cult at Körmend. The city paid its
obeisance to Kossuth at his bier and the centenary in 1902 has
been transformed into a memorable festivity by the Körmend
people. The respect of the Kossuth traditions has contributed to
get Gyula Lukács, the candidate of Körmend, nominated by the
Independence and "48" Party in the Parliament in 1905.
A crowning of this political victory was the erection of a
Kossuth statue, inaugurated on October 6th 1907 by Ferenc
Kossuth.
LÁSZLÓ KOVÁCS:
HONOUR IN STONE
Scientists' Commemorative Places in Vas County and Elsewhere
-----
The author presents a tiny slice of a 10-year-long
collection work started from the county: the commemorative places
of scientists in Vas County and - for assuring the opportunity of
the comparison - some Hungarian statue-parks, marble table
collections from Sopron and Eger that are connected to it by
their theme. Establishing commemorative places - according to the
author's opinion - proves two things: there is a person who
deserves to be commemorated and there are persons on the given
location to whom it is important the scientific, technical past,
they respect their famous ancestors and guard their respect
closed in bronze, marble and granite.
-----The ultimate aim of the commemorative
place exploration work is to strengthen the Hungarian identity,
and to encourage the work by the help of the examples of great an
cestors.
IMRE MOLNÁROS:
AVAILABLE ESSENTIAL AND TOXIC MICROELEMENT
CONTENT OF VAS COUNTY SOILS
-----
The task of assessment and evaluation of Vas County
sols' available Fe, B, Mo, Al, Pb, Cd, Co and Cr microelements is
a pioneering work. There were no analysis before similar to the
present one, therefore the result of this survey can be deemed as
a starting ("0") state from nutrient economy and nature
protection aspects. There is a statistically proved correlation
between the available mocroelement content of the soils and the
most important soli characteristics. The available microelement
content of the soils is generally the highest around neutral pH
and 0.1-1.0% CaCO3 because the leaching of
microelements and their fixation is then more moderated.
-----The soils of Vas County - according to
examined microelements - are belonging to the natural category,
they aren't polluted. In Vas Conty, the essential microelement
content of the soils proved to be low on 37% of the area
(copper), 64% (zink), 7% (iron), 46% (boron) and 45%
(molybdenum). By detailed survey of the present state and by
revealing the relations, the tasks for the individual areas could
be determined by which the soil fertility could be sustained or
even improved and the rational land use could be elaborated.

KNEFFEL-CSABA KOPPÁNY-BOLDIZSÁR HORVÁTH:
THE FAMILIAL OCCURRENCE OF PERNICIOUS VOMITING
AND PATHOLOGICAL PTYALISMUS IN THE PREGNANCY PERIOD
-----
The authors present the patographical data of three
generations' nine pregnancies. They proved a uniform early
pregnancy syndrome according to the homo and heteroanamnesis of a
family member working in the healthcare as well as the clinical
observation of the third generation's women. In every female
family member, back to three generations, early pregnancy ptyalismus,
emesis as well as hyperemesis gravidarum syndrome causing
serious complaints could be proved. The consequently consisting
similar syndrome brings up: the similar socialisation, however,
it is also possible the familial occurrence of this syndrome. The
regarding the cumulative familial occurrence of ptyalismus
and hyperemesis gravidarum the authors couldn't find
literature data. According to those above, they deem these cases
an interesting casuistry.
