ZSOLT MÓROCZ: ST. STEPHEN KING

The essay attempts to reconstruct the character of St. Stephen. To the formation of the king's personality a decisive effect was exerted by the sacral origin and mission consciousness of the Árpád-family. The pagan prince became a convinced Christian due to the impact exerted by St. Adalbert. His belief was characterised by a deep spirituality and immovability from which his determined acts have derived. He became a king in the Augustinian sense of the word (iustus, pius et pacificus). Since St. Stephen, the Hungarians - excepting the communist intermezzo (1948-1989) - are the members of the European cultural community.

VILMOS BRENNER: JOHANNES AQUILA

(Data and thoughts to the life of the great pannonic master of the gothic painting)

The multilingual Pannonic area appeared as an individual fine-art scene as a result of the activity of Johannes Aquila by the turn of the 14th and 15th century. The significant master of the Gothic painting born at Radkersburg acted in the geographical triangle defined by the localities Velemér-Radkersburg-Fürstenfeld. In his works, the influence of the Luxemburg-house German-Roman emperors' monuments from Prague can be demonstrated as well as the influence deriving from Italy through Tirol and Friaul.

SÁNDOR IVÁN KOVÁCS: VERSICULA OF THE MÁTYÁS ZRÍNYI'S STUDY ANDTHE EPISODE CONCERNING VAS: THE KÖRMEND BATTLE IN 1458

On 7th April 1458 the German-Roman emperor Frederic has defeated the army of Simon Nagy, ban of Macsó. (C. f. Bonfini, Lib. X, 25-45.) Mathias, Hungarian King has sent ban Simon to fight the empereror again and this time the ban defeated the emperor. The two battles (together with the victory of Mathias at Jajca) have been interpreted by Miklós Zrínyi (1620-1664) in his Latin and Hungarian verses in his study about Mathias, the poet and war-lord, as well as in rhythmic and alliterating rhymed adagios. Among these, the origin of the "Reddidit amissum fugiens Germanus honorem / Dum pro te fortis militat ipse Deus" is not known to the Hungarian philology. Is it the part of the poem written about the Körmend battle? Or, a New Latin quote adapted to it? Also are missing the analogues to the Zrínyi's poem cycle concerning Vas Shire: "Vas / shire / vomited / smoke, / smokes". (Vas / vármegye / füstöt / vetett, / füstölög."). The former appears to be a poem while the latter a folk-poetry. Whether are there German (Austrian) analogies as well? The author welcomes any contribution to the address of the Vasi Szemle.

KÁLMÁN SZÉLL: DR. LAJOS SMIDT (1903-1975)

(The doctor, poet and museum-founder collector)

The author remembers Dr. Lajos Smidt, deceased 25 years ago, a hospital director, head surgeon, poet and collector. Lajos Smidt acquired during his life a valuable and precious collection that he bequeathed to the city of Szombathely. His collection that is unique in Hungary can be seen in the Smidt Museum at Szombathely. The museum is one of the show-places of Szombathely. The author indicates in the biography part of the study that Smidt's medical career was broken because of his religious belief but he still received recognition as a collector. He was a versatile physician and a good man who rightly deserves the gratitude and appreciation of the posterity.

FERENC KAPILLER: "TO SUFFER OF LOVE" (Part III.)

The study presents the life sacrifice of Ferenc Kováts (1932-1958), a curate of Gencsapáti. The analyse does not content with the sheer event description - in a more superficial approach the story would hardly be more than an "usual" AVO-history; the faith-martyrdom becomes a whole for us together with the authentic picture of the spirit and the intellect.

Faithful to his self-sacrifice made when he was a seminarist, the curate of Gencsapáti endured even the largest sufferings with an exemplary firmness until his death. Here we can read extracts from his sermons as well.

LÁSZLÓ GYÜRKI: THE SECRET OF THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS

The complete publication of the documents discovered near the Dead Sea more than 50 years ago has not been made - up to this day. Among others, this also yielded erroneous opinions and premature conclusions. One of them is that the Vatican "retains" the publication of the scrolls since compromising documents can be found in them regarding the early Christianity. The present paper surveys the history of the scrolls' publication, the relation between the Essenians and the Christianity as well as indicates that the early Christianity can more exactly understood with the help of the Qumran findings.

SZABOLCS KESZEI: THE CHIEF'S DOCTOR

The name of Dr. Lajos Markusovszky is familiar in Vas County. He is buried here, the county hospital is bearing his name. It is widely known that he participated in the War of Independence in 1848-49. The author disproves the errors concerning this period and presents the real activity of Markusovsky in 1948-49, emphasizing the less known but very important period when he carried out the treatment of the seriously wounded General Artúr Görgey.

DÉNES BARTHA-ATTILA J. KOVÁCS: A BOTANIST FROM WESTERN-TRANSDANUBIA

(The work of József Jeanplong)

Dr. József Jeanplong retired Associate Professor, the Honorary Doctor of the Gödöllő University, although was not born in the Vas region, he is still tied to it by his youth and the major part of his work. The article is more than a simple paying obeisance to the life and research work of the 80-year-old botanist. The majority of his studies was published on the area of floristics, coenology, nature conservation, history of botany and education. Many of them appeared in Vasi Szemle. His papers are serving the cause of the Western-Transdanubian botany since 1941.

NORBERT BAUER-BALÁZS KESZEI: ADDENDA TO THE KNOWLEDGEOF THE VEGETATION OF THE KŐSZEG-MOUNTAINS

During the field surveys the following new species were found in the neighbourhood of Kőszeg: Thalictrum simplex, Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, Poa supine. Among these, the Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani is new to the mountain's flora while the other two species occurrences were known previously on the Austrian side. The species that are known from the older regional data but are not recently published in Hungary: Descuriania Sophia, Phytolacca Americana, Galanthus elwesi, Narcissus poëticus. Open rock grasses have been formed on the greenschist surfaces near Bozsok. For better understanding their succession relations needs further research.

LÁSZLÓ KRIZSÁN: LÁSZLÓ MAGYAR'S PROGRAMMEFOR EXPLORING SOUTH AMERICA

The study presents schematically those results that were achieved by Hungarian explorers in learning South America during the 18th century. The programme of László Magyar compiled in 1846 for exploration of the unknown areas of South America can be deemed as a continuation of the Hungarian explorer's school. The Hungarian Scientist Association has not granted its approval because of financial reasons. Therefore, almost a half of century later, foreign explorers have achieved those scientific results László Magyar endeavoured to. The study publishes the letter-perfect application written by László Magyar in this issue handed to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences dated on 25th June 1846 in Maldonado, Uruguay.
